Gas smell?

Is it just me, or did I smell gas in my Jeep?

I hauled a trailer about 150 miles out, and on the way back I smelled gas almost the whole way back. I looked under the hood and underneath and I didn't see anything out of the ordinary or that caught my eye. Any words of wisdom?

Did you fill up, you know stepping in gas is like stepping in $hit. It stinks...

Iíve had a bad gas smell coming from the rear (of my Jeep) a few times while out wheeling in the desert. I thought I had a leak but couldnít find any signs of one. Took it to the dealer and of course they said everything checked out fine. Never have found the problem yet. When you were towing was it very hot that day, thatís when I have the problem?
:)

All the same here - also smelled it once at the top of a mountain (after a long crawl up it).

Yeah it was just over 100deg and I was going up and down a lot of hills and it was extremely windy. Sounds like that was the deal then. You two have no damage to your Jeep as far as you know?

1222 06-25-2011 03:53 AM

Nope, no damage to mine, at least in that area.
:)

No damage here too.

Not sure what causes it exactly (like you I had the Dealer look at it and they couldn't find anything).

My guess is that some kind of pressure builds up around the gas tank/evap canister and a valve opens up in the rear to relive some pressure and you get the smell. Just a guess. I think the smell for mine was the worst right by the gas cap/vent.

Funny this thread came up today. We pulled a small trailer that I built to go behind our JKU to a ball tournament today. There was a rain delay when we got there. Laid the. back seats down to crawl in and have a snack. The smell of gas was terrible back there. I looked everywhere for a leak, but didn't find anything. That was the first time I had ever noticed it. I hope out doesn't stay that way since I am pulling the same trailer 9 hours to gulf shores next week with my daughter and two friends in the back.

Gas smell or leak?

My 94 Jeep smells like a gas leak when I start it up. Had it pressure checked and looked around. nothing. I think it happens when I start her up. Lemme check under the hood and get back to you. - Red Rider
