I had the same thing happen on mine and changed the timing gears/chain last summer. Yours looks like much more has broken off than mine. I don't think I pulled the water pump while working on mine.

I am guessing that year was electronic. I haven't looked at the numbers but a 4.3 Vortec may produce more power than a 79 305.
