Yep. Over torquing the pinion nut can put too much preload on the bearing leading to an early failure. When a pinion seizes it's never a pretty picture. Been there.

I don't know whose bright idea it was to ever put 3.07 gears into a Jeep, but they should be shot. That's what mine came with and even on factory tires it was a dog on the highway.
