I don't have any experience with the DX version, but I love my Expedition One Trail Series bumpers. If you ever plan on doing a tire size larger than 37", these bumpers probably aren't going to work...

The smell might be the adhesive used for the permanent installation. I bought the ones that have velcro and I don't remember a smell. If there was a smell, it didn't last long.
