I swapped a softop and hardtop between a 2004 TJ and 2002 TJ respectively with no problems - other than the 04 didn't have the hook-up for the rear windshield washer.

Servicing the differential is not listed EVER on the A maintenance schedule. I would therefore have a hard time classifying that as "routine maintenance".
