Not to sure about the JK's yet still researching mine but my 5 speed TJ ran 4.88 on 35's and was very torque in the low end but faded around 70. I hope that helps.

Yes you can get away with 18/35 rims. While NFRs2000NYC's comment is correct for your usage you should be fine and you can compensate the contact patch by increasing the rim width and tire width....
