The TJ has to have a rear track bar. Having had mine break free from the axle while driving made it very obvious. As for not being able to get it out of the bracket, this also sounds like the issue...

I had a '93 YJ for a few years and I always had to double-clutch into 3rd gear. I did some research and apparently it was a common issue for that particular year.

An iPad would be a good option. They are durrable and have everything you are looking for, to include the SSD and no moving parts. If you have the 3G version you could also use it for navigation.
