Got to play properly off road and experiment with HDC. After a couple of faster than expected descents, worked out gear selection altered the speed. 1st Low is sooooooo slow!

Safety would be my assumption in order to meet NCAP standards. The other benefit as has been pointed out by someone your side is it stops crud being thrown forward by the tyres.
