Update,

Somehow the thermostat housing was leaking (supposedly). I hope the replacement holds. Never had a sign of any leaks anywhere. There is no buildup or scaling around the thermostat...

This works for skis/snowboards, but I would not go that route for bike(s) just from a weight...
