Bullethead, did you by any chance notice if you had turn signals, radio and lighter? If you lost them as well it's probably your ignition switch needing replaced. $30 - $40 will get you a new one.

The leash and seatbelt method is a good one, however it's best if you use a harness as opposed to their collar, a sudden stop that sends pooch off the seat could crush their trachea and cause them...
