Replacing lifters, quick heads/exhaust manifold question

I'm replacing the lifter in my JK (08' 3.8L) and I've got 90% of the work done, I just have to pull the heads but I've ran into an issue. Most people are saying I shouldn't have to remove the exhaust...

When removing the heads is it necessary to remove the exhaust manifold ??

I'm trying to pull the heads right now and I'm trying to see if I have to remove the exhaust manifold as well.

Oil is at a safe level, but it's Deffinitly dirty...

Oil is at a safe level, but it's Deffinitly dirty which is also alraming because I just changed it about 6 weeks ago, I put in Mobil 1 synthetic (first time running synthetic). she just eclipsed 82k....

No knocking so far, just the tick. All though...

No knocking so far, just the tick. All though after the incident Friday night, the ticking has gotten alot louder and become almost violent, still doesn't sound like a knock though.
