You can't just splice in a USB cable into the cigarette lighter. The lighter is 12v and your USB devices would need 5v.

My family has had 5 XJ's over the years (model years 1989 through 1999) and EVERY one had the head crack at some point. Two of them would chew up U-Joints fairly often as well.

I don't know about the Jetta, but if it is like the wife's Beetle parts are expensive and a major pain to replace if things break. I don't seem to have that problem with my Jeep.
