On my 99 I had the same issue. I soaked the yokes in PB Blaster for an hour then removed the clips. After that the u-joint caps would not budge. I wound up using a propane torch to warm up the yoke....

One thing I would check is your U-Joints. From my experience intermittent drive line ticking can be traced back to a worn out U-Joint. Not that expensive to replace or difficult to do on your own.

I don't mind at all, its nice to know what to expect. I think it was around $250 but most of the bill was in labor. It took the shop 3 days to isolate the leak plus another day to replace the seal....
