There's a world of difference between 35's and 40's. D44 would be fine for 35's, but probably going to want a D60 or similar if you REALLY want 40's.

Just depends on how much wheeling you want to do and tire size. If you want to run 35's with a lot of wheeling, you'll want at least 3 - 3.5" even with flat fenders.
