See if the tre fits the other steering knuckle. They are both the same taper. If it does, then it's a knuckle problem, if it doesn't, then it's a wrong part.

Check your brake light fuse...I believe it's #2...

Check your brake light fuse...I believe it's #2 (20 amp) in the fuse block in a 98. It sounds like the issue is either a short in one of the rear lamp holders, or a short in the multifunction switch.
