Assuming it starts out in low gear that sounds like torque convertor stator failure wouldnt pull a shit house over but ok on the highway if so needs t q and if full of metal likely due for a build

I agree although your description is very vague the only thing popping into my mind at the moment would be a differential cross pin walking into the pinion gear so pull the diff covers and have a look

that would apply in high range as the trans output shaft would turn at a one to one ratio with the driveshaft however since the pawl anchors the trans output shaft which is splined to the transfer...
