It's a breather. It equalizes the pressure eliminating vacum which could damage seals. Similar to the idea behind PCV.

You dont need gaskets just some RTV. Use the waterproof stuff. Apply it to a clean dry surface and bolt half way tight, wait a half hour and tighten fully your ready to rock.

Definitely, don't use the platinum plugs. They work very well in cars designed for them i.e. newer cars with platinum plugs from the factory, but will foul quickly in vehicles not so designed.
