JP Magazine did a conversion to a 4x2 JK. You can buy front Dana 44s from the factory for roughly 2 grand, and find one in the junkyard for a lot cheaper. They (JP Mag) put an Atlas transfer case in their conversion, since they were eventually going to make it a rock crawler. If you're going to get nuts with your Jeep, it's really not that bad of a thing to start off with a 4x2. The front axle in the 4x2 is just a tube the same diameter as the axle in the 4x4, you'd be ditching the stock axles and upgrading the transfer case anyway. That's why alot of guys who know they want to go balls-out with a rockcrawler start out with the plain-jane SE since they'll replace most, if not all, of the running gear anyway. Why get the high-dollar stock Jeep if you're going to upgrade everything anyways?

Good luck with your conversion!!
