JLU back up camera

Hi, Has anyone removed or disabled there backup camera? does it trip any codes on the computer? I am thinking of upgrading to the new JLU and before I even leave the lot I will remove the camera and I want to know if it will mess with my JLU's computer. Thanks

Why would you want to disable this feature?

I wouldn't think so. Disconnected mine for a brief time whilst installing rear tire carrier and didn't cause any issues. If you are deleting spare tire, there are kits to keep it on tailgate.

That's a good idea,,, you don't want the Gov't to see where you are backing up.

Haha, I like this last response. No guys The reason I will be removing the camera is simple, I will turn my head to look I will use my mirrors to look. I will never ever look my stereo to back up my JLUR Nor will I allow anyone driving my JLUR to look at the stereo while backing. I will also be disabling my AUTO start/stop lane depart. forward collison blindspot, what ever else stupid stuff to make us Americans lazy. I will always be paying attention to the road and will not rely on my vehicle to do it for me.

I wouldn't call it lazy. I'd call it safer. You can still use your God-like abilities first and then use the camera to double-check that a toddler didn't crawl up under your spare tire. Probably should disable the airbags, ABS, cut some foot holes in the floor, and replace the tires with stones.

Seriously. There's a whole area behind the Jeep you CANNOT SEE now matter how much you look.

I've been driving for a long time. I ALWAYS look. And I added a camera to my JK because it's better that way.

I have been driving since the early 70's and am pretty good at using mirrors and swiveling my head around but man I wish my 2018 jkurr had a back up camera. not only for in town but offroad it would be even better. I have a 35" tire and a back up camera would be so nice.

I almost ran over a small child once that ran behind my vehicle. The only reason I didn't was the mother noticed the child gone at the last minute and screamed for me to stop.

The camera is just one more safety feature and should be used with your mirrors and also turning of one's head to look about that it is safe to back up.

As Mr. Spock would say, your logic is flawed.

You could have saved a lot of money by buying a JK with none of those items. The JK is the last simple machine.

I don't use my little toe(s) either but probably won't "Remove" them....

It comes with the camera, it's one tool along with the three mirrors. Hooking something up to the hitch alone is reason enough to leave it be.
I can think of half a dozen other uses.

But..... no I can't see how removing it will trip any triggers.

(really interesting first post though...)

If you ever backed up in a Wrangler, you'll know that turning your head around will only give you a good view of the rear head rests, and the spare tire.

The rear camera is like billion times safer and far easier to use.

Whenever a fellow Wrangler owner rides with me, and I back up, their very next mod to theirs is always a rear camera.

Just think of your "stereo" as being an exciting new super-mirror!

I own a JKU now, Never needed a camera to help hook up trailers, Hell I used to drive 18 wheelers and never had or needed a rear camera. I guess I could see the camera helping in an offroad situation, But I'll never need one, I would much rather have that camera facing forward recording. I don't need to worry about state safety inspections as we don't have them anymore.

If you drove 18 wheelers you would not be considered a driver of normal skill...

The rest of humanity would benefit from as many cameras as can fit on a Jeep Front/Rear/Sides/etc Hooking up to a trailer (solo) the camera comes in handy.

Now I'm a bit on the older side. Almost 60. But your comment reminded me of my grandfather. He was born in 1896 and fought in WWI. Lived to be 94. Anyway to get to my point.

The last brand new car bought by my grandfather was a 1964 Chevy Duece/Nova. He ordered it direct from the factory and he deleted the radio. Having such a distraction in a car was just out of the question to him. How times change and yet still stay the same.

Just put a piece of black tape over the camera and be done with it.

What is it about Wranglers that seems to attract this kind of mentality?

Agreed. I have a '16 75th, and find it tempting to look at the JL's but do not really like all the "improvements". Some things I would like, but overall the JK is just fine for me.....
