Media screen went berserk

I’ve had my 2019 JL wrangler sport for 2 weeks. Today while I was driving, the media screen began switching between settings, changing my car play music, turning on my backup cam, switching from Car Play to radio, changing stations and then putting the max a/c on (it’s winter here). No matter what buttons I pushed, it reverted back to scrolling through settings and features.

At the dealer (my husband drove it there without issue later that day) they ran diagnostics and found no issues.

Has anyone had this happen?

Unfortunately, intermittent issues are impossible to diagnose when the system (what ever it is) is not acting up. The thing to do the next time is that when it is acting up, take it directly in and DO NOT TURN OFF THE JEEP. Turning off the ignition has the effect of rebooting the system and if it starts back up normally, nothing can be discovered.

I haven't had anything that dramatic, but occassionally I do have an issue at start up. My radio begins to boot, then freezes, and resets to factory specs. Dealership can't reproduce the issue.. really annoying.

Next time

If it happens again, I'm going to pull over and video it. If I can get to the dealer, believe me, I will.

Mwg0415,

When you say 'occasionally' it happens, have you found a pattern? For example, it only happens when the engine is off for more than a certain time. Does it happen when you turn the full electronics on but not the engine? Trying to find a pattern. Thx.

Can't find a pattern, I've tried to reproduce it, and I started recording when it happens. Zero correlation between incidents. Last time was two months ago, time before that was about three months prior. I've owned my JKU since Oct 17, and this has happened about 4-5 times (I didn't record the first time, just thought it was a fluke). Only ever happens on start.

I can tell when it's going to happen, there's a slight pause between turning the key and the engine turning over. Radio turns on, immediately turns off, then back on as the engine cranks. I use a different image for my radio screen, I can always tell when it's happened because the image is deleted. It's happened enough that I've just left a flash drive in my glove box to restore the image.

No pattern for me. Sometimes my Iphone is connected and Car Play is engaged. Other times I'm listening to XM and no phone attached. Today I got video footage of it in action. I was listening to Itunes on Car Play. It switched songs (from a totally different playlist), shut off ITunes, went to AM radio and completely killed XM from the panel. Then it CALLED MY SON! Later, XM was suddenly back, but it switched to AM, then to the climate screen, then to "connect a device", etc. I'm waiting for it to withdraw money from my bank account .

I get random black screens/reboots, but no crazy behavior like you're experiencing.

I have the 8.4 UConnect system and mine started flashing on and off the other day - settled down all by itself, but reminiscent of my 2013 Ford Explorer with Sync that Never worked properly - one more black mark on my JL

I have had a similar issue with my system. It changes channels and flickers on and off. It is very annoying! My Jeep is a 2018 Wrangler JLU bought in December 2018. I complained to my dealer and they ordered me a new system. Hopefully, that will solve the issue. Will keep you posted.

This happened to me with my 2018 Sahara. It happened for about 3 weeks after I drove it off the lot and then started working fine. Crazy.

I bought my JLU 11 days ago and this happened to me on the 2nd day with about 40 miles on the vehicle during one drive plus the dash lights/display would go dark for about 30 seconds a few times. It hasn't occurred since then and I've put 300 more miles on the Jeep. I just wrote it off to maybe updates were occurring.

I think that's the one for this issue. There are several software updates for these new JLs.

My '19 Sport S just did this yesterday. Drove it for a few miles, turned off the Jeep, got back in a couple minutes later and the media screen went blank. After about a mile it came back on.

Problem has been resolved

I'm happy to report that the dealer changed out the UConnect and the problem is resolved. This is the only thing that worked, so if you're having issues, I recommend you getting the system replaced.

I had that happen once too. Screen is blank, but music was still playing. I've also had a bunch of times not being able to switch between apps as the touch buttons don't work and I've had a few times where my radio volume was way low. Nothing cures any of these issues but turning off the Jeep and letting it sit for quite awhile to reset everything. And when I mean quite awhile, I mean hours.

I've come to the conclusion that the new Uconnect systems sucks. Way too many bugs.

Mine started this morning... Nice that the Jeep came with a (mandatory) Back-Up camera.
So now what? You get used to using it probably too much.

Start backing up as I look down and nothing - Black/Blank screen - I hit the brakes quick and now I'm back in the stone ages before BU camera...... this after fighting getting blown all over the highway this morning..

Not a lot of love for skippy-doo-dah this morning.

--------

Apparently there is a "bulletin" out stating there is a software update to fix bugs - According to the dealer "It takes an entire day for them to download software updates and then most of time the file is corrupted and they have to start over".

That's a quote.

This info I found out after I had pushed the "assist" button on my mirror and was connected to uconnect and I asked for an OTA reboot. Not possible and neither are the software updates.

Another swing and a miss by FCA

Wow, so that's a big swing and miss. How can the Uconnect system work so well in other vehicles, work so well in my JK (never a hiccup in over 3 years ownership) and this one has bugs out the ass....well not literally.

RE the blowing comment: Was it just a super windy day or are you having steering issues.

Steering. Jeep was in the shop for 2 weeks awaiting arrival of new - redesigned track bar.

Wow, did not know you were having issues. So it's the wandering and loose steering issue rather than the steering wheel wobble/death wobble issue? I'll say my new Terflex steering stabilizer has really helped my steering wheel wobble issue, been 3+ months now and all good (crosses fingers, knocks on wood).

But keep me posted on the new track bar, I might push to get this done too if it does indeed help.
