Nick's 52 Chevy Coe build

Hello WF. I've been recently inactive on this board. Still see some familiar faces though and that's nice. I just got caught up in life mostly and due to employment change was forced to sell a jeep build.

Sunday morning my Grandfather who turned 100 in May passed away. We were not close. In fact my father made sure my sister and I had little to do with him. My father passed away some time ago but before he did he forgave his father for a lifetime of abuse. It's sad really...My kids never got to know either my Dad or my Grandpa.

Well enough of the sad story. My uncle, cousin and I have been cleaning out all the barns and sheds in preparation for an estate sale. That's when I came across this beauty. She is a 40's Chevy 5 ton or 10 ton. It's longer than it appears so I'm leaning towards 10.

While I would rather just trailer it and bring her home I can't. Make no mistake...This will be in my possession this fall. When it does...crazy ratrod truck build will commence.(I still have the motor from my Jeep build)

That's cool. It would be neat to do some research and find out what business it belonged to and see if they are still in business or if you can find anyone with ties to it and just let them know you have it, maybe see if you can find a background story on the old beast.

Nick, before you go chopping it up, you might want to get an appraisal (as is and fully restored). It might be worth more left alone rather than ratted out.

I spend way to much time watching the antiques road show, and they say never, ever clean or modify anything.

Thanks.

Don't take this personally. My Grandfather bought this truck and has owned it very long time. I will be the next owner. It really doesn't matter to me what the intrinsic value is.

Little update. Still working on settling the estate so the truck still sits on the farm. My name was placed on it by the lawyer so as soon as they get done squabbling over land I can bring it home.

Under hood

Engine under floor boards

I found the grill

There is more there than just the grill. Grab all that tin and whatever other parts you can find. Even if the parts are no good they are useable as examples for when you go searching for restoration parts.

That restored box truck is amazing.

Good Luck, L.M.

Got the old girl home title in hand. She is a 1952 Chevy COE. Built May 20th, 1952. My grandfather purchased it July 31st, 1957. It originally had a livestock box on it. The weird thing about these old Chevy cab overs is the rating. Chevy rated this truck as a 2 ton truck but the tag shows the weight rating as 16,000 lbs.

Had a little trouble with the trailer. Lucky I made it to my shed before it broke. Well the COE is home for a bit. Need to find a mid eighties donor truck and start working on it.

There is an episode of "Roadkill" on YouTube where they shortened the frame on a truck like that. They were going to drive it across the country but couldn't get it done on time. It did make a cool looking truck though. Whatever you do don't paint the cab! Just clear coat it at most! That thing looks awesome!

Very cool COE. Glad you didn't have that trailer crap out on the road.

Keep us posted on the progress.

That's the plan. Although I do have to fix some of the body. Drivers side dlower door jamb is bad and floor board is shot. Also my grandfather used 12 sheet metal screws to attach a monstrous mirror. I'll need to fix the door hinges so they shut better.

But yes the color and paint are staying.

It scared the crap out of me when I was tilting the bed to unload. It would have killed me if it had broke like that going down the road at 65.

I'm very glad it didn't happen during one of many family trips to Moab hauling the Jeep through the Rockies.

Yep. Pretty scary. Good reminder for the rest of us to check over our trailers. Glad the timing was in your favor

Also if there is any possible way to do it I would keep the wheels. Those old two piece wheels are super cool. Good luck finding a tire shop that will touch them though.

I'm only keeping the cab. I'm going to run super singles on the rear. Alcoa rims almost around.

I'm going to weld it up and sell it. Stacy gave me the green light to buy a larger trailer. I'll get a 20' tiltbed with 10k axles.
