Always in the family, finally in the Club!

All of my friends, and I mean ALL of my friends, had Jeeps in high school. Everybody wheeled or had something to take off road, except for me... I did, however, roll my '85 Subaru GL wagon on a dirt road at 50mph, so at least I was trying!

I had a brand new, off-the-lot '04 Grand Cherokee, but I never used/abused it like a Jeep should be used and abused (except for when I rolled that one after a bad snow storm in northern Michigan while on leave... extenuating circumstances with that wreck, trust me) so I never really considered myself a "Jeep owner," so much as a "chic soccer mom." The insurance company fixed it after the wreck, but I never trusted it and after and sold it about a year later.

Two vehicles and a DD-214 later, I had some cash in the bank and the entire summer off to enjoy myself before real school starts up, and I went on the hunt for a TJ or a Cherokee. The first thing I looked at was a 98 TJ in nearly PERFECT condition, but I ended up lowballing the guy too far (his wife said "Absolutely Not") and they already had an offer on it for $500 more than I offered, just waiting for the guy to get a loan when the bank opened on Monday. The next 10 rigs I looked at were absolute piles of shit, each worse and more rusted and knock-ier than the last, and also a pair of low-mileage 2000 Cherokees in perfect shape but listed on Craigslist for RETAIL and OVER! I get super depressed, kicked myself constantly for that original lowball offer, and started looking at trucks K-5s and old Broncos... when they first Jeep owner called me back. The other guy couldn't get the load because his Mom refused to cosign, and I had cash! I went out and picked it up yesterday, put plates on it today, and already had my first off-road excursion.

I finally feel like I'm in the Club.

I am so stupidly happy with this red '98 TJ. When I said "perfect shape," that's up-north-salt-on-the-roads perfect; there is some minor rust on the frame and a little on the door, but it's all surface and paint-scratch rust. There is a small dent in the hood from the guy's son starting it up and ramming into his boat at low speed, but it looks like a trail badge so I like it. The paint is just scratched up enough that I'm not afraid to add more. The suspension is absolutely solid, and even through some nice body flexers today it didn't whine, pop, creak, or make any "bad" noise whatsoever. It's starting hard, and I think it's ready for a new starter or perhaps just a battery (most likely the starter though). 130k miles on the 4-banger, but nary a clack or rattle to be heard. It even has a good exhaust, which is totally weird for northern Michigan. The meats even still have decent treat left, fairly aggressive 30" ATs of some brand I can't remember. All the seals on the drivetrain are still good. Unbelievable find for up here.

Anyway, time for you all to fold me into the bosom of the Jeep family.

Welcome and enjoy...

Is it me or is there a flood of new Wrangler owners here? I've only been here for 3 weeks and it seems like this week hit the jackpot. Maybe it's always like this...
