Another one bites the rust

Checking in here from beautiful Northern Illinois.

I've read somewhere that rule #1 of Jeep buying is never buy someone else's modded Jeep. I thought I was being a smart shopper when I picked up an un-modded '99 Wrangler SE on the cheap.

I'm not new to Jeep, but never owned a wrangler. I let one of my kids take over payments on my '06 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited and I regret it every day. I love that thing.

So this Wrangler newbie took the Jeep into the shop for a safety check and oil change. Came out of there with a stack of estimates from u-joints to the oil pan rusting through; roughly $3K worth of work. That didn't bother me. I'm mechanically inclined and have done all sorts of repairs over the years.

However, the biggest problem, and one I didn't take serious enough: frame rust. The rear left trail arm bracket broke almost free of the frame. Now I have a busted rear driveshaft to add to this list of repairs.

Looking for options and knowledge about this problem brought me to the forum.

Looking over several posts and seeing earnest, helpful responses encouraged me to join.

I look forward to getting to know you all better.

Thanks in advance!
