Bitten by the JEEP bug - looking for advice & information

Who knows why it happens? One day I was feeling comfortable driving my regular car. Now all I can think about it getting a JEEP, owning it, driving it, taking it off-road (but not too far off-road?). Someone is going to say "It's a JEEP thing!"

I have narrowed my search (based on price range) to looking for a TJ (1997-2006) with a 4.0L engine, manual transmission, and a hard-top / soft-top option.

What I do not know (as of yet) is what TJ issues are common, which are acceptable, which are repairable, and which should be avoided altogether. I am old enough (50) to know every vehicle that comes off the line is different but there are some things which are simply inherent in a vehicle.

So, please, tell me is helpful. Not looking for long stories unless they illustrate your point. Help is what I need from experienced JEEP owners.

Thanks!

My brother has a 97 ani have an 01. A couple things I've noticed is when it rains his leaks bc of the vent right behind the hood. In 98 they changed that to a smaller vent. Also between 97-99 (I think that is the correct years range) the factory headers crack or get splits. Also in 03 they changed the soft tops a little. So just FYI if you get one 03 and up the when/if you look at soft tops then look for 03 to 06.

The cowl leak is common and easily fixed, and the only difference in soft tops is the zipper orientation and accommodating the bigger padding on the roll bars.
