Bought the Jeep I wanted since I was a kid. Midlife crisis complete.

I'm completely new to the Jeep world. I just bought a 2006 Wrangler X TJ with 96,000 miles on it that is in pretty good shape from what I can tell.

The previous owner obviously never went off road with it and it looks like all their upgrade decisions were based on looks alone. It looks like they opened up the Smittybilt catalog and just bought what they think looks cool, which is fine, but I'm finding that quite a few of their accessory decisions were not well thought out.

The tires are 20" Black Rhino alloys with 33x12.5 MT tires on it, which I'm finding that while they look cool aren't exactly great for airing down and going offroad, ride like crap on the pavement, and cost a damn fortune to replace. Oh, and they stuck one on the stock spare tire carrier instead of buying a bumper with a tire carrier, so its a real PITA to open and close the tailgate, something I aim to remedy. I'm probably going to be looking at getting some 16" or 17" wheels with AT tires in the future when these wear out.

I have no idea what a lift of any sort looks like or if they put one on this thing so I'm going to try to sort that out and do some research on what I want to do. I have noticed a little tire scrubbing when the wheels are locked doing U-Turns and when I cross railroad tracks.

I have little to no offroad experience other than driving a couple things in the army 15 years ago. I don't see myself doing any sort of serious rock crawling or driving around in mud pits, but I do go camping quite a bit with my little adventure trailer and I'd like to be able to get out back and do some off-road camping in the future. My aim is to build a reasonable all around off-road machine, not a specialized crazy thing.

My plans, in no particular order are:

1. Figure out the lift situation and fix the scrubbing. I'm going to search the forums and try to figure out what I need to look for to figure out what the previous owner has done, but anyone who wants to give me pointers what to look for I'd appreciate it!

2. Replace the wheels and tires with something more capable and affordable maybe. I like how the current 20" look with the 33x12.5 tires look, but looking at the prices to replace them its pretty insane vs 16 or 17" tires. The lack of air space with the larger wheel kinda sucks too. Alternately, I'm not against doing a little lift and just fitting larger tires like 35" and keep the wheels. I need to do more research.

3. Replace the bumpers with ones that have a tire swing arm and a winch mount so I can self recover. At least thats the theory.

You are right about the looks on your jeep. It looks great.
Mine came with snorkle which after reading some threads is really just for show if you don't do many other things to the motor and other components.
