After nearly 5 years of wanting one more than anything, I finally joined the club last weekend and purchased a new-to-me 2007 Wrangler Unlimited.
The purchase process was quite an adventure as I essentially bought it sight unseen. I had my dad looking for me in PA so I could get one without the rust/winter wear issues on it that are common in MA. Got it last Saturday, then immediately drove it 400 miles back to New England on Sunday. It exceeded every expectation I had for the trip with smooth, comfortable, and quiet ride! I even got 22mpg on the trip and have been averaging 21 ever since which I am thrilled with (hand calculated at the pump with a very light foot).
I was pretty deadset on getting a 6-speed and my dad test drove four 6-speeds in the search process. However, I got such a good deal on this one with a hard top and power options (let alone just being an Unlimited) that I changed my plans and settled with an automatic. I'm well aware that automatic JKU's are the soccer mom special and the bane of many a Jeepers existence, but I'm absolutely loving this thing so far. A big part of that has to do with the fact that my last car was a certain small fuel efficient Toyota sedan that will not be named and I could not possibly have hated any more. That being said, the change in fuel consumption has been a shocker but driving around with the freedom tops off on beautiful days and getting wave after wave from other Jeepers has made it worth it.
I'm going to try to control myself when it comes to mods, but we'll see how long that lasts. Already ordered a stubby antenna and a hand screw set for the hard top and this week I'm planning on picking up door mount mirrors for taking the doors off and a cover from Quadratec so I can fully remove the top and have something in the trunk in case of an unexpected rainstorm coming through while it's parked at work.
I haven't gotten the doors and top off yet which I'm afraid is going to be quite the challenge for Labor Day weekend. I already stripped the Torx screw over the drivers side on the roof trying to start the removal process and the doors have some rust around the hinges that the dealer sprayed over with white Rustoleum before delivery. The previous owners don't seem to have ever removed the doors or complete hard top. I'm stocking up on tools and WD40 this week as I'm determined to get everything off this weekend!
One of the first topics I'm going to be diving into on here is rustproofing ahead of what looks like it might be a brutal MA winter. Besides that, just going to be lurking around for ideas on cheap/simple upgrades and checking out other JKU builds.
So I think that's enough of my rambling... here's a picture! Just an iPhone shot so far. I am big into photography as a hobby and often shoot with a Nikon DSLR, just haven't gotten a chance to get some good shots of the Jeep yet. Cheers!
