Hello from Malibu Canyon

Just found this forum yesterday. Looks like a great resource with lots of helpful folks.

Since I'm gonna ask a question or two that many others have probably asked… please forgive me in advance. If there are threads that someone knows are helpful and relevant I'm all eyes and ears. Please direct me.

I'm ready to buy a jeep. I think I want an Wrangler Unlimited 2012 or newer. My trusty 2000 Dodge 5.9l 4X4 ram pickup is starting to deteriorate. 190,000 miles of hill climbing fun and baja thrills have probably come close to the end. Back in the day I would not consider a jeep because the stock power of the Jeep's always felt a bit lacking without considerable work and upgrades. It seems to me that the 2012 and newer have an engine that is both pretty efficient compared to my truck and enough power to tow my motorcycles anywhere I need to go. Best of both worlds I guess. I love fishing and camping and sleeping in my vehicle sometimes is a must I can't live without. I always wanted a vehicle that was more crawler than puller but budget and probable use was a concern.

I am willing to spend up to 45K. I would like to get the most bang for my buck. I am really torn between buying a sport and upgrading right on the spot or getting a hard rock and figuring out a few things and then upgrading if I think I need too. I'm used to doing work on my own vehicles but suspension and gearing is not something I'm very familiar with. If I don't do the work should I
find a reputable shop or have upgrades done at the dealer? How are the jeep dealers with doing upgrades before warrantee or after?

Any tips and tricks or insights that someone would like to share would be greatly appreciated. I'll start combing the threads to see if someone is in a similar boat.

Glad to be here.

As mentioned, because this is the newbie check-in area, you may not get the answers you are looking for. I suggest you check out this forum area and post your questions there, I think you'll get a better response.

Thanks guys… right out of the gate, I floored it and spun the tires… I'll get over to the other section. In a few days of reading my horizons and options have been expanded. Many different configurations I had not considered. Always great to see the guys with years of experience giving back.

Welcome to the forum... My advice before buying anything is come out to some of the get togethers around the area and talk with some of the guys and get ideas. At the long beach meet held on the last Friday of the month you'll get a chance to see a lot of built JK's and all sorts of other wranglers.

That's a solid idea. Long beach is pretty far but since I wanted to go to Huntington Beach Dodge to see their lot I'll see if I can arrange both on one trip. Do you know of any others that are more near Ventura County Line? Thanks for the tip!
