Hi from NC, hopefully future YJ owner

Hi all, I am hoping to buy a YJ in the next few months or so, and I joined here to learn more about them. Why a YJ? Because I've always liked them, and they are about in line with my price range. I have a '96 Kawasaki Vulcan 1500 motorcycle that I'll be reluctantly parting with since I don't really need 2 motorcycles, and that should give me most/all of the money for a Jeep.

I've always wanted a CJ or Wrangler style Jeep. I had a '71 CJ5/Dauntless project some years ago, and it was a casualty of my divorce, and that has never set well with me. Now that we have a WJ, I have the Jeep bug again, and a YJ would make a great tow vehicle for my little aluminum bass boat.

So there's my life story, I'll be lurking/reading for a while until I start getting some cash in a shoebox.

i'm driving a 94 YJ and loving it

the only problem is finding one with decent miles and the under body not rusting up.

also, don't make my mistake, get the 6cyl 4.0l . . . the 4cyl 2.8l has the same gas mileage(about 20mpg) and like half the HP

Thanks for the welcome, and for the advice about the motor. I was open to checking out the 4 cylinder, since I don't know much about it. I would have probably been leaning toward the I-6 anyway, since I had one in a previous Cherokee and have one in my current WJ. Familiarity is a good thing.

Rust (other than a little surface rust) to me is probably a more important factor than most everything. I tend to keep things a long time, and my intent would be to rebuild/replace motor, trans, etc as needed. Starting with a rustbucket doesn't make for a good candidate to be a long term keeper.

mine has a little rust but not much . . you can tell a few spots have been spray-bombed

but the under body seems like it have some rustproofing done back in the day cuz it's still in fairly good shape(yes being 15 years old there is some rusting, but tolerable and controlable if need be)

That's key, I'd say- not out of control. Spray bombs don't bother me in the least, I'm not looking for a trailer queen, I just don't like holes.

If you found yours close to home, I'd think you are pretty fortunate to find something up there that isn't too rusty- I have a lot of family in Detroit and surrounding areas, and rust as you know is a big issue for everyone.

It is a small world, where did you go to high school? I'm driving a white 93 Wrangler with a pretty big lift. As soon as I get her back on the road you'll probably see me around town. Flag me down when you see me.

tarheel, I just registered over at carolina offroad. A friend and I are trying to get up to Uwharrie as soon as I get all the kinks out of my steering.

Wow, apparently this is the NC thread. Hydrilla, I'd invite you along if I knew when we were going. I had hoped to take of Monday thru Wednesday, but it looks like I might have to cover somebody at work. Now it may be a "hey, I'm not doing anything, let's go to the middle of nowhere and play" thing. We're not planning on doing anything serious. I'm new to the jeep world too, so i want just find a place to get a feel for it.

Sounds great, y'all just let me know. Weekdays are tough for me tho.

If anybody wants to go fishing, specifically bass fishing, lemme know. I'm about to finish up with a jon boat to mini-bass boat conversion with a 14' tin boat pretty soon :-)

Also I meant to mention, if anyone near me needs an extra hand with their Jeep, I'd be glad to help. Especially during this torturous wait until I'm able to get one myself. I'm no wrench, but I know sometimes it's tough to do things without an extra hand. I don't have a ton of tools but I have a great drill press, and normal stuff like a sawz-all, jigsaw, grinder, drill, etc.

Where do you fish bud? I've got a Triton TR-20X with a 225 Pro-XS. I've been on the look out for a Jon boat to fix up to fish some of the local ponds.

simoniz, I haven't lived in the area all that long but the places I've been so far in the tin boat are Lake Mackintosh, Stony Creek Reservoir, and Beaverdam Lake which is the trolling motor only section of Falls. I also put in at Shearon Harris and had a good time. I plan on checking out Mebane Graham Lake, Mayo, Belews, and a few others. That X boat is pretty danged sweet, I had one of the 1st generation TR-20s, a 2000 model, before I went to Skeeter and ran a couple different ZX225 boats. No big boat now tho.
