Thumbs up Howdy! Just joined the forum!

When I was 16 I paid $200 for a late '40's Willys Jeep. Fixed it up ,enough to run , and had the time of my life. That was almost 40 years ago and no Jeep since.

I'm planning to buy a Jeep Rubicon after the first of the year. It will be a secondary vehicle that I may drive to and from work once a week. Primary use is to use it for camping and backpacking trips. The majority of those trips will be in the central Texas area, Big Bend, Davis Mountains, Guadalupe Mountains NP, etc. and the occasional trip to NM and CO.

My wife wants a hard top but I'm partial to soft tops. What are your recommendations?

I know the real key to off roading is the driver's ability. Its been 40 years. I'm not as fearless (stupid) as I was at 16 to 20. Any tips on getting the skills I need?

Thanks so much for the advice. Glad to be here!

Welcome to the forum and congrats on your decision to return to the world of poverty er I mean Jeeps. I would take the wife out and test drive a couple with hard tops and soft tops. I think that she will realize that the soft top is a much better idea. Explain to her that she will be the one to help you remove and replace that million pound hard top when necessary. That should convince her. As far as off road skilz, check out some of your local clubs. Most have runs for beginners and you can learn a lot from them. Have Fun!

and FYI, I bought mine with the hard top, bought a soft top 3 months later and the hard top has been taking up valuable real estate in my garage ever since. Don't ever intend on using it again.

Welcome..

Join a local 4x4 or Jeep club and let then slowly teach you the skills, as well as having a fun group of people to hang out with.

Do you have somewhere to store the hardtop when it is removed ?
That and being able to remove it is generally the biggest reason to go with a soft top.

Thanks for the advice and recommendations! Another question . . . is there any reason to consider anything other than the 2 door other than increased cargo capacity? Also, the wife wants to know if the interior of the Jeep with a soft top is cold when the weather is cold. I assured her that Jeeps come with heaters and that I'd buy her a nice coat!
