Jeep TJ 5,000+ mile roadtrip - March 10th

Hi all,

On the 10th of March, a friend and I are departing New Hampshire in my 1997 Jeep TJ and attempting to reach the Grand Canyon, as well make it home, all in 10 days. The wrangler has roughly 215,000 miles on her, yet she is still running strong. My gear ratio is 4.56 and I'm running 35" BF Goodrich Mud Terrains with a little over half tread left on them.

Nearly every weekend I drive the jeep two hours (one way) to the White Mountains in NH to go hiking, and I never have any trouble on the highways; besides the poor gas mileage and a max speed of 65 or so. My point is this: I have done numerous hours of highway driving around New England with no issues, yet I am still aware that issues may still arise over the course of the trip. I have a decent amount of mechanical skills and experience and will be bringing along the majority of my tools.

I like to think that I've built her relatively well, and I believe that if you take care of your jeep it will take care of you...now that being said, feel free to call me insane for considering this expedition (or stupid; my feelings won't be hurt.)

I'm here to ask the jeep family for any advice they have with regards to my trip. Any input at all is appreciated.

We are not planning on staying at any hotels, and will be camping out each night. The idea is to live as minimally as possible (this is with respect to money as well.) We will be doing some hiking along the way and making stops are various landmarks, as long as time allows it.

In addition, anyone who lives in Missouri, Oklahoma, the Texas pan-handle, New Mexico, Arizona, or Utah feel free to send me your contact if you are going to be available at all the week of the 13th. We are hoping to see as much of the country aside from the highways that we can in the short period of time we have.

So; any questions, advice, or insults will be taken into consideration. I'd like to hear everyone's thoughts on this idea. We have been making a list of what to bring, what to see, and what to do, and we are still adding to it!

My name is Nick.

(p.s. My buddy has a sedan we could take if necessary...but what would be the fun in that?)

Welcome to the Forum Nick!

Although the sedan is probably a smarter option the fun factor would be greatly reduced. Some of my fondest memories were derived by surviving the misadventures of life. Go for it and have a great time.

to the Forum..

That really sounds like a lot of fun!

I am in Arizona and we can still have in March, some real potential heavy snow storms at the Canyon. So I would keep a eye on the weather report.
