Looking to buy my first Jeep

Hello out there from South Florida!

Love the outdoors, many toys Waverunner, motorcycles, mountain bike, SCUBA and now I want my first Jeep!

Love to do mods on motorcycles, so looking to do the same on a solid Jeep.

I'll do the search next. Looking for best year for under $6000.

Welcome Jerry! For around $6k, you may be able to get a YJ ('87 - '95) or a TJ, which I have ('97 - '06). If you have any questions, just let us know.

When I bought mine last year, I knew nothing about Wranglers except that I wanted a hardtop and air. Fortunately, the one I chose turned out to be a winner. A 1998 Sahara TJ with the highly desirable original 4.0 liter inline 6, Dana 44 and Trac-Lock rear dif, 3-speed automatic, 3.73 gearing and 15x8 wheels. $7,000.

There is a huge difference in what the market has to offer between, oh $5,000 and say $10,000. My suggestion is increase your budget a bit and look for a TJ, 1997-2006. Most of the Sahara models are equipped as mine was and were the factory state of the art until the Rubicon came out in 2003.

But if you like square headlights (YJ 1987-1995 -- there was no 1996 Wrangler) and you are looking for a project, $6,000 should be enough.

Other folks on the forum may have a different opinion. (Ha!) Fasten your seat belt. It's going to be a bumpy ride.

Thanks guys!

Great advise, and right on to what I was thinking! In South Florida you can find stock 1997 for $5000 to $6000. Or a YJ with some mods around the same price. However, I like the idea of raising my base price some and start with a good base for mods and go with the Sahara maybe or 1997 with the right mods for around $7000ish. Not looking for anything crazy as Florida is mostly sand, mud and water, but would like something reliable and looks great!
