New Dude, First Jeep, General Thoughts?

I'm thrilled to join American Jeepdom! Always wanted a Jeep (wife did too), and my 2006 Suzuki Aerio (a fine little sport wagon, though not common) was totaled for you guessed it bumper damage. Thought now is the time to fulfill a dream and also buy something with real value and easy to replace bumpers, commuting in the Chicago burbs...

I think my 2001 Wrangler Sport has stock suspension and engine, 150,000 miles, good tread on my Falken Rocky Mountain tires, but I was wondering since it is stock is that ready to go most off-road places? Any good advice for an off-roading noob? Maybe a better way to put it, what's the one thing you wish someone had told you before you nearly killed yourself and beloved Jeep?
