New Member, Shopping for First Jeep

Hello from North GA! I am shopping for my first Jeep. I've always wanted one, but it was never convenient or couldn't afford it. My wife approves, so I am over the first hurdle there. We have two kids (who both insist on a soft top and we do too), which means I'm looking at a 4 door. This will be our third vehicle, so not a DD, but will likely lead to fights on who gets to drive it for the first couple of months. I'm looking for the following and have found a few options and looking for advice.

JKU Sport
New / late model
Soft Top (Sun rider)
Manual Transmission
17" wheels min.
Tow package
Budget: under $30k
Prefer to keep mileage under 50k

I don't plan on doing much regarding mods. Might upgrade wheels at some point and add a winch and lights.

I found a used 14 w/ 41K miles for $25k and an 11 w/ 42k miles asking $26k. Jeeps are priced high here, so used retain their value apparently and new ones don't come down much. I'm a Costco member, so Costco pricing for a new one is just under $29k

I can use some advice on should I go with the older 3.8L engine or newer 3.6? What are the advantages / disadvantages? Which is more reliable?

What do I need to look out for? The 2011 rides great, but the top leaks... is that a big deal to fix or should I anticipate it will leak forever?

I'm trying to educate myself, and appreciate any thoughts or advise.

Thanks!

Welcome and Good Luck!
I personally prefer the 3.6L over the 3.8L

I did read a thread on this from a couple of years ago, so wasn't sure if much had changed. Seems like the 3.6 l is the way to go. I found a dealer who is took a '14 on trade, 41k miles though. Price seems decent, but will have to replace the wheels.

Please don't rip me too hard for not having more background on all of this.

Update: New Wrangler Owner

Thank you all for your advise. We bought our first Wrangler last night.

Black Sport Unlimited w/ Max Tow, Premium Soft Top and UConnect. 6 spd Manual

Taking it back to be detailed today and changing out the tires. Getting a good deal on new Sahara stock (17") wheels and tires (Take Offs).

Ready to go out and break it in.

Thought to myself last night while driving it home...

Took her out today. The kids insisted to go out top down, even though it was a little cool
