New Michigan Jeeper

Hey everyone! I am the proud new owner of my first wrangler, a 1999 TJ sport, and I'm loving it already. I'm located in south east Michigan so if anyone knows of some nearby trails please let me know

It needs some TLC but I plan on giving it all the attention it needs! It's a 6 cyl. 5 speed manual.

I got a question;
I need to replace the shocks soon, so I plan in just getting a whole lift kit (shocks included) about 4" of lift. I was looking at RC the most, is there a different brand any of you would suggest and why?

Welcome!

As for stuff to drive on nearby, there isn't anything of value (scenic, historic, terrain) nearby. Sorry. You'll have to head north if you want that. There is Mounds off-road park, but it's a park - an overgrown playground rather than a natural space - for what that's worth.

As for lift, 4" implicates a LOT of added expenses to do it correctly. Yes, you can do it cheap and wrong and net 4" of lift, but why? Do you NEED 4" of lift, or would 2-3" and 31-32" tires get the job done for you? There is nothing in Michigan apart from the playgrounds that can't be managed with 31" tires, a bit of driver skill, a shovel, and a winch.

For the 4" lift idea, by the time you get done with needed suspension (springs, shocks, adj. trac bars, adj. control arms), drivetrain (SYE+new rear shaft), and new tires, figure on being in it $3000-3500. You'll also need to regear your axles, too. If you're running a Dana 35 rear axle, factor in the cost of a Dana 44 or Ford 8.8" swap, too.

Not to be a downer, just hoping you'll make informed choices when you upgrade. It'll make for a happier, less stressful Jeep owning experience!

Yeah I was just looking into all that and realized it would be much more than I was expecting! So for right now, since I'm on a budget (have no job) I'm just getting a 2 inch skyjacker spacer lift to fully clear the tires I got on now. They rub a little when fully turned one way or the other. Eventually once I get a job I'll look into about a 2-3 full suspension lift. Thank you for your advice!

As far as trails, I knew about mounds I was just wondering if there was anything down here. Is there anything in northern Ohio? I haven't been able to find anything.

Thanks again!

I grew up in Michigan. Are the Jeep Junkies still around? That's a group I ran the Drummond Island and Cadillac runs with a few times back in the mid 90s.

I have no clue, I'm sorry. This is my first jeep, but I've heard D.Island is a blast!
