Thats what i think also but of course the dealer and a few parts houses tell me the electronics are diff. which i believe but the block appears the same so using the 98 parts should work. I would hate to go to all that work and find out it wont work. i have found a lot of other helpful info here so i am giving it a shot.

Hey Tom, welcome to the forum.

Unfortunately the TJ and XJ used very different computers, so a lot of the sensors and stuff will be different. You can take the good XJ block for the most part and swap over a lot from the TJ engine, that would be one option, but there are some strange differences as far as accessory brackets and what not goes. You might be better off selling the XJ and finding a TJ engine in the long run.

That is starting to sound like the better option. The tranny is toast so the rest will go on craigslist to build up the jeep fund for new motor.
Tom
P.s. the wifes jeep!
