New to Jeeps

Hello everyone,

Currently, I am the owner of a Honda CR-V and a Scout II. I'm wondering about the wisdom of trading in the CR-V for a Jeep if gas mileage and reliability are a concern.

I'm considering something like a CJ-7, TJ, or an LJ. Something with a manual transmission in it (The CR-V doesn't have one and is impossible to find. Carmax has ONE in its inventory in the US of America at this moment.).

I like the simplicity of a Scout II, but the crowds that drive these are much smaller and usually limited to country people. The Jeep crowd seem like a much larger, livelier crowd. This reminds me of the Honda Element web site that I'm on.

I'm going to go through here to learn as much as I can before making the decision to buy one at some point in the future.

Welcome to WF! The Jeep community is a hidden gem to non-jeepers. Gas mileage isn't the best, but I can tell you, it will be the most fun you have had

But can I afford to have fun on a commoner's salary? I really don't know much about Jeep products in general, and the thing that's keeping me from buying one is many repairs. I don't know how reliable they are, even when you do all the maintenance on them. I need to find a subforum here that helps to address the newbies' fear of buying one, especially if they're coming from Hondas and Toyotas, or Japanese cars in general.

The last American vehicle I had was a Dodge Charger, a real lemon. I had voltage regulators burning out and taking the batteries along with them, a carb issue that was never resolved up to the accident that totaled it, and the clutch went out on it at 45,000 miles. It was fun to drive, but Daddy was the one paying the payments and repair bills on it, not me. I really like the Wranglers, especially the older ones, but I'm not ready to handle a payment on one of these AND big repair bills, since I've yet to receive my Scout out of restoration and a 4X4 manual conversion. Maybe my Scout will cure me of buying a Jeep unless I win the lottery. In that case, gas mileage and cost upkeep wouldn't matter. Right now, it matter a great deal.
