Hey, I'm new to the whole Jeep scene.. And I was just wondering, what's some basic information I should know? Some background information of jeeps, what they can do, what they can't do (if that exists), etc. I am turning 16 here soon, and a Jeep sounds like a great idea for a first car. I would like to know what variables can affect my mileage, tire sizes, cylinders, year, model, make, anything that you think I need to know coming into the fabulous world of Jeeps, just respond, send a message, anything! =) I'm a quick learner and would love to learn more about Jeeps.

Jeeps are great - yeah obvious statement. Jeeps do not get good gas mileage. Jeeps are not "street racers"-if you want a go fast sports car would be better of with a little Honda.

If you want a vehicle that is the only 4wd convertible-that has a large support from after market companies, and becomes a "way of life", and are easy to repair and work on, will get under your skin, get a Jeep.

Generally most people like the inline 6 cylinder-and stick or auto is totally a personal preference. Although most don't recommend the auto and 4cylinder.

Need a little more info from you, budget and what do you want to use it for? Lastly probably ahead getting as close to stock as you want and build it or mod it the way you want yourself.

I'll fill that in. He's about to start driving and wants one as his first car. Looking for a TJ around the 00-02 range. Wants a soft top preferably, though I've told him to be open to the hard top as its nice to have (or sell).

Welcome. I'm a rather new jeep owner too. Be ready to get hooked on this type of ride. I've met so many new cool people that enjoy camping, hunting, fishing, etc. Anyways, to help answer your question, this is what I know.

I get 15-19 mpg but I drive where others may not. I can take my top off in the summer and hang by the beach. I can then put the top back on and head up a mountain in the winter to go snowboarding. I can customize my ride and make it like no other. And to top it off, every other Jeep owner will wave when I drive by. Can it get better?

For clarification, yes Zetsumie is right, those are my boundaries and my price range would be nice to have 4000-8000. It'll be a nice first car in my opinion and I'll be doing small things like just regular driving, perhaps beaches and trails? Not crawling or anything, (yet)!. Any other questions just ask.

I agree with jp2611, start with a rig as close to stock as possible. Buying a pre-modified jeep can be a risk. You will never know exactly what has already been done to it, the quality of the aftermarket parts or the workmanship. Buying stock gives you the opportunity to build it the way you want it and you will know that the work is done properly. Modifying your Jeep is a big part of the fun of owning one. Oh and once you own one you will understand why we don't consider them to be cars or trucks. There is nothing else out there quite like it. Good luck with your search.

Thank you, JDs. I am currently looking at a CJ7, it's brown in color but I don't know much about it other than that it's a CJ7, I'll try to get some pictures and more information tomorrow. Any information about this model I should know? Or that I might find interesting?
