What to look for really depends on what you want to do with your Jeep.

If you are willing to compromise on the sound level inside the Jeep, a soft top is the way to go. You can take the stop down and pop the doors off and then if the weather starts turning bad, you can just put it back on. If you want a quieter ride and aren't planning on taking the top off every weekend, I would look for a hard top. (You always have the option of buying one later but it will save you time and money in the long run).

The 5 speed you have in mind sounds like a good one, if you don't mind having less power. If you're planning on taking it off road alot, in my personal opinion (not an expert), you should get a manual transmission with a straight 6 (6 cylinder) so you have the option and the power to utilize bigger tires.

If you already know what features you want in your Jeep, the next thing to look at is indicators of how it was treated before it came to you. Is there a towing package on it already? That isn't necessarily a bad sign, but you have to wonder what kind of stuff the Jeep has been hauling.

You should also pull up carpets and get under it to make sure there isn't any rust. (exterior rust isn't too big of a deal, you can get rid of it fairly easily, but you don't want any signs of the metal being eaten away).

You want to make sure the suspension hasn't been messed with. I know it is always SO tempting to buy a jeep with the 7 inch lift and 44 inch boggers, but that not only tells you that the Jeep has already had a hard life, but it may have problems resulting from the mudslinging that you can't immediately see. The best thing to do is buy a stock Jeep and fix it how you want it so that you can be secure in the fact that you have been the only one being hard on it.

Welcome to the Forum Chevyboy89

As mentioned above, living in Maine you want to give it a thorough going over to look for rust.
That being said...when you take it for a drive make sure that you put it to the test. Get it out on the highway (speeds in excess of 55) to check for vibrations or the dreaded DW. Put it in the dirt to make sure that both 4L and 4H are functioning properly.

If it has a soft top, inspect the windows to make sure that the zippers and pulls are in good working condition
