Newbie in Alaska

What's up everyone? Well, I've always wanted a Jeep but I've never been anywhere that would've made a Jeep a practical option. But now we've just moved to Kodiak, Alaska (Coast Guard) and we need a cheap 4wd to take full advantage of the island.

Finding anything on this island is a challenge at best. Plus, Jeeps go for a premium up here. So I was lucky to find a 90 YJ for a good price in Anchorage. Although, its costing me around $400 and a day of travel to get it back here. This isn't technically my first Jeep. A long time ago I bought a project CJ7, and at my first inspection everything looked repairable. Then after getting it torn apart I realized the frame was too far gone to rust, and it was off to the scrap yard.

Anyway, its good to be here and I look forward to sharing the beautiful views from my new Jeep with y'all in the future.

I've got the 4.2 with a manny. Its going to be mostly a DD used on the weekends to get to bike trails or the creeks/rivers to go fishing. 3-5" of lift w/ 33" A/T and new fenders are planned.

Nice!

These aren't my pics. These are what were taken for me before I bought it. So, once I get it I'll have it cleaned up and better pics will be taken.

Yeah it looks real clean, but not being able to inspect it in person worries me. The distance also hampered my haggling ability. So its thumbs crossed that the frame is solid.

It needs weather stripping on the doors. It was never done after the paint job. Also, the signal shifter is broke off. Both parts are on order and hopefully here soon.

Welcome. Man, you're in Jeep heaven up there in Alaska. I wish I could go back up there, I was stationed in Anchorage for three years. There are quite a few off-road clubs up there too and most of the members are very knowledgeable and can help you out. Go up to the Alaska 4x4 Meet and Greet this summer at the state fair grounds and you'll probably meet all of them plus have a great time on one of the trail runs.

I'm coming to Alaska in July. I wish I could figure out a way to get my Jeep up there with me.

Hell, yeah! That sounds like fun. Could make for a cool trip with the family to get outta Kodiak for a weekend.

Yeah unless you've got an extra $2K laying around to ship it or want to drive 3500+ miles (both one way), you're pretty much outta luck. In a few years when we leave I'll probably be doing that on the way down.
