Newbie saved a TJ

Hello all. As odd as it may sound I saved a 1997 Tj SE from the salvage, from a frustrated owner who put 170,000 miles on it and it just quit. After doing everything I could find and NOT consulting here first, I took it to a dealership and $350.00 later we had ignition but no start. Fuel pump burned out. I dropped the tank put in a new pump and SHAZAM!! she was breathing. I replaced the brakes and rotors all the way around, new exhaust from the header back. New plugs, dist cap, rotor, wires plugs, and some rust repair. reupped the seats(myself), put in a new dash (wife wanted tan interior) new door panels, carpet, chrome bumpers, stainless hinges, new paint, new tan best top, and she is pretty. Been running great for about a year now.

Well she has been sitting for about three weeks (not a rare occasion) but this time we got in turned the key, NOTHING!!!!! Just like before. No dash lights no engine turn over. Door buzzer works when key is in, horn works, lights work, just no ignition. I checked the hot wire to the distribution panel (where the fuses are) all look good but disconnected and cleaned anyway. I feel stupid because I never asked the dealership EXACTLY what they did to fix this problem the first time.

Welcome to the forum. Obviously the Stealership didn't "fix" anything so I would definately not take it back to them, if you wish though I can send you my mailing address and you can send me $350 everytime you want something "fixed".

Welcome! And ditto on the pics!

That's an ignition switch fault from your description.
Check for power at the switch, then see if you get power on the other wires as you turn the key to run, then start.

They have a habit of breaking the metal arm between the lock cylinder and switch, this could easily be what went wrong. Buzzer will work, ditto horns and lights, but everything powered by the switch is dead.

Part can be bought separately, but steering column has to come apart for the replacement.

God I miss that Jeep. Forgot the kinda Jeep, 80 SX4.

Thanks I will post up on TJ Forum also. I replaced the ignition module trying to get it to work the first time. I still have the old one ( who throws stuff away right? ). So I'll pop the old one back in and see what happens
