No honey I'm not looking at porn in the bathroom

Guys, just picked up a stock 97 TJ 6cyl, 5 sp with 15k orig miles...

Listen, It's been a while since my beloved rust bucket Bronco went to 4x4 heaven..It had a lift and tires...Back then, she made all sorts of weird sounds, clunks, humms, death wobbles, shifting lanes on its own, fluids dripping everywhere, but I loved her just the same. It was different times....Back then Dick Cepek was the cool name and the boys in CA had the coolest 4x4 rigs...It was an emerging industry...

So here I am facing mid age crises and wanted to recapture some of my youth.. I now have a little more money in my wallet, and in the process of raising my TJ to house 33's and add a few other accessories for my weekend toy....

I went into 4 Wheel Parts after spending many hours on their website, and may I add, feeling guilty about lying to my wife that I was on my computer conducting business for all those hours, and no honey I'm not looking at porn in the bathroom. Just need to fire off a quote, almost done..."Wow that new Smitty built XRC line is pretty nice". I bet black rims would look great, or should I go chrome old school..Hmmmm Black! OK......15's or 17's oh god, let me do a search on TJ's and query rims and tires. OMG my legs are numb!!! Been sitting here too long... dead leg dead leg..

Ok, so I'm on vacation and obsessed with my new Jeep...I head to 4wp and greeted by a nice young man behind the counter who seemed as optimistic as I. He has a nice LJ with 35's and long arm kit...The place is 4x4 bliss. Guys coming in with tricked out 4x4's etc ordering more parts to make them bigger and better. Phone is ringing off the hook. "Yes sir warn is offering the wireless remote with any winch purchase". We can install the ARB lockers" I'm having a blast and want to join the club.

We put together a package. Not radical. just enough height to house 33's... They suggested a 1'' body lift and a 2'' pro comp sus lift.. basically longer springs and shocks. I'm told this is as close to stock without compromising drive shaft angles etc..."Great I'm in"

Ok , I leave a deposit and bring my Jeep in the following day for the install... They order the wrong rims. so I leave my Jeep with them overnight. Ok, people make mistakes, this is why they put erasers on pencils..I'm on vacation...All is good....

I call them up the following day and told my Jeep is ready. It's been aligned and road tested.....Great, I just finished lunch with my parents and they take me to 4WP.

The Jeep looks amazing! New Smitty Built XRC front bumper and winch, syn line, KC lights on bumper and windshield. Black rims and tires fill in the wheel wells nice. I couldn't be any happier. I go and order extended flares to cover the part of the wheels which stick outside the body, and a set of neoprene seat covers.

I shake the mechanic's hand, slip him a sizable tip and take off for the stereo shop to have my stock speakers replaced and a new head unit installed....And then it happened... A Bronco flash back.....

I hear on take off...CLUNK....CLUNK.....CLUNK.. 2nd 3rd 4th all fine...Hmmm maybe it's me. Let me feather the clutch the next time I take off... Here we go a stop light.....rev.....rev......rev.....feather....feat her......slowllllly featherrrrrrr...CLUNK CLUNK CLUNK!!!!!! ,MFER!!!

I get to the stereo store and in less than an hr all is done. Tech says, "hey I heard a clunking sound in 1st gear.... sounds F-d up man" I drift for a moment and have visions of my old rust bucket Bronco with the death wobble...."Sir your keys"

Like a 911 call for a murder, I frantically dial 4WP and tell the manager my findings...I think I just mumbled something like.. It goes clunk and it didn't do that before. Did I mention my Bronco went clunk.. Why does my Jeep go clunk?

No problem sir, bring it in and we will fix it in a jiffy...After forty minutes and three times on the lift here was my answer.. It's common to hear noises..

It's coming from the transfer case from chain slack.... One guy said "hey man, it's a Jeep" I couldn't even respond or comprehend what he was saying at that very moment.. If you were to analyze the store surveillance camera I'm sure you would see a broken man with his mouth open... I just mumbled and clunked out of there...

I wont even tell you guys what I spent, because I do not want any evidence getting back to my wife on what an absurd amount of money I dropped on my TJ..

I would have thought with time and evolution the co's who mfg these kits would have had all the issues worked out...? Chain slack! Really???

So now I have a beautiful TJ which goes CLUNK in 1st gear...

I'm tempted to go back to stock..
