Exclamation Potential Jeep Wrangler Buyer

Hey im new on the forum,
Ok so im thinking about buying a jeep wrangler. Been searching long and hard but i picked up on this jeep. Its a 1999 wranger well make a long story short here it is
Cars for Sale: 1999 Jeep Wrangler 4x4 SE in LIVONIA, MI 48152: Convertible Details - 293820329 - AutoTrader.com

Anyway its looks like a solid deal especially since the guy lowered it to 6200. But with all good deals there comes a catch the guy put a new jasper 4 cylinder engine in and then added 33 inch tires with a four inch lift. Now i test drove it and the speedometer is off more than likely due to the tires. The engine light came on which was odd because the engine is brand new refurbished. There is a little crack in the windshield but thats not my biggest concern my concern is the 4 cylinder engine with the 33 tires and 4 inch lift i know jeep's are not speed demons but i feel like its not even going to top past 60 mph or the engine will eventually go out. So the question is is this a good buy?

Welcome! Sounds like the guy didn't change the gears. You could always test drive it again and go to the parts store and have them pull the engine code to see what was causing the check engine light to come on, and then, if you really like the jeep you could offer him less! Good luck!

The CEL could be something simple bad 02 sensor etc. Take it to a place that will run the code for free and see what it is. I would also ask to see the paper work on the engine and make sure that is in good order. As for price, depends, how does it compare to others in your area? If you can I would hold out of a 6cly. The 4cly is a good engine with as you noted with bigger tires it struggles.

For around the area its definitely one of the cheapest but idk i feel like with this jeep im going to have not only engine problems but axle issues, gear issues, let alone i have to get a new windshield. But on the other hand the car is in great condition, well the exterior and interior anyways but i just want this jeep to last. The guy is given me till saturday to decide.

I wouldnt buy it unless your 100% sure. Theres always going to be others for sale and you wanna be very happy with your purchase, not just satisfied.

What if i bought the car swap the 33' out sell those, get some 31' maybe even lower. Get a lowering kit lower the lift and also i would need to get a new windshield since its cracker. Would it be better to do this or just to keep searching for another jeep.

Just keep looking 1) a stock jeep would be less expensive because the owner hasn't invested a bunch of money in mods. 2) you'd be spending even more on de-modding it so you'd be closer to 8 grand when all was said and done anyway plus time and energy to do it.

...x2, better to find a stock one than to remove mods. For the money your gonna save, its worth it.

Yeah i think im just going to find a stock like you all suggest. The jeep wouldve been nice with the 33' and a four inch lift with a V6 but oh well on to the next one.

I have 2.5liter on 33s with no problems I hit 70-75 highway... Jeeps aren't fast... I thought you wanted a stock one. And it's not a v6 it's an inline 6

Ok you i came across two stock 1998 jeep wranglers. Figured its best to just go that route and make modifications down the road if im up to it well anyway here is the first one.
1998 Jeep Wrangler, Used Cars For Sale - Carsforsale.com
Pro's: No rust at all
Six cylinder 4.0 L that i was looking for
Manual
One of the cheaper prices i have found
Con's: 122,000+ miles on it
just am/fm radio would have to buy sound systems

Here is the other:
1998 Jeep Wrangler

Pro's: 100,083 miles on it
New Brakes and Tires
All fluids have been changed
Full sound system (sound bar)
Manual
6 cylinder
Con's:
Cracked windshield
rusty side view mirror but only rust i saw on body
Rusty underbelly i mean i know overtime your axle, tire rods, etc are going to get pretty rusty but still a little concerned
Engine components a little rusty

Each car has its pro's and con's. Best deal out here in cleveland for jeep wranglers between years 1998-2000. But just wondering if i should pick one of these or just keep on looking.

The quickes way to check for codes is this way and it can be done at your house: Put the key and from the off position to ACC position 3 times in a row. Any codes that are on the computer will flash up. It will say done. There might be codes that will not make the check engine light come on. My understanding is that the code must be thrown 3 times within the same area. Look number up on the internet and it will tell whats wrong.
