Purchasing my first jeep l, need advise

Hello everyone!

I just made the transition from the tuner scene and have transitioned to a more fun, versatile platform that can be used in pretty much ANY terrain, a jeep.

Now I've been lurking and looking for a nice jeep to get myself. Been looking at TJ's & JK's and I stumbled onto a really great deal on a 4 door JK 2008 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited X.

Test drove it, I felt it drove smooth, slight issue once engaging first, but no worries, my left left is a little used to 6 puck clutches.

Windshield is cracked. Hood prop is broken. Then I got underneath.. And found this Click image for larger version

Now I though, wow! That's definitely not good. Not sure exactly if this is just the oil pan or what it is.

Any advise would be great! If this is an oil pan I'm sure a gasket could take care of that. The guy showing me the jeep told me "that's not a problem, jeeps are notorious for burning & leaking oil.

That can't be completely true. Maybe if it was a couple of drops, I'd understand. This looks like more than that.

Thank you for taking the time in reading this.

-Luis

So I've done some reading on this leak and it appears there could be different things that may be wrong.

1. Valve cover gasket
2. Oil pan gasket
3. Rear main seal

Any other things I could be missing/overlooking?

My guess would be oil pan gasket or rear main seal. The valve cover gasket is at the top of the engine and would have to be leaking down the side of the engine. However, as mentioned, because this is the newbie check-in area, you may not get the answers you are looking for. I suggest you check out this forum area and post your questions there, I think you'll get a better response.

Thank you for pointing me in the right direction & the welcoming!

I'm so excited to get my first jeep I don't want to rush and jump into it and possibly get something that's going to cause me a lot of issues very soon.

I'm also typically the mod/upgrade type of guy as I don't like having things break, reliability is the most important to me.
