Should I buy this Jeep? (oh, and I'm a newb!)

Newbie here and glad to find this awesome forum!

:::Right off the bat I need some of you guy's expert advise:::

My wingman from high school days has his old 1996 Jeep Wrangler covered in dust in the back of his warehouse. Said he would sell it to me for $1,500 but after seeing it what am I getting into? (see attached pic)

It has 103,000 miles, last ran in 2008, and he doesn't know if it runs. It was at his hunting lease when it last ran.

Has a 2.5 liter engine, manual, and is 4wd.

I know NOTHING about Wranglers (have owned many Cherokees and Grand Cherokees) other than I've ridden in many (including this one back in the day) and other family members have had them.

IDEA #1:::
At first I thought this would make a fun project to rebuild with my 14 yr old for his future ride. Was thinking lift, rims/tires, bumpers, LEDs, stereo, etc... But that might be a much larger commitment $$-wise. Not sure what this would run?

Maybe it just get's back into running shape and ends up back at my hunting lease and comes home to be used like one would use a Polaris Ranger UTV around the ranch.

It needs paint, rear bench seat (missing), cracked front window, to get it running, tires, and a top or hardtop.

What are your thoughts on this year model? Is it a good platform to build on? Are there better year models?

If it run's and drives what's it worth?

If it needs motor or trans what's it worth? Even if given to you would you take it for free and bring it back to life?

Personally, I wouldn't buy an old YJ. The rust factor is one thing. The 2nd thing, that I never liked about YJ's. is that they have an awfully rough ride, due to the poor suspension. I got a ride in a YJ before I brought my new TJ. It was like day and night. By the time you got it running really good and looking decent, you will probably end up spending $5000.00, especially if it needs engine and transmission work, which it probably will. Spend $6000.00 and get a decent TJ, and you'll be happier.
