Soft top questions

I'm goin' to be gettin' a wrangler once I pay off my truck and use it for a trade-in within the next yr or so. I already test drove the '12 wrangler 6 spd soft top and I was very satisfied w/ how little road noise I heard when I did 75 mph on the highway. My wife is tryin' to rain on my parade tellin' me that one of her coworkers owns a soft top and that after a yr or so once the top got broken in the road noise is horrible. So I'm on here to ask if after the soft top gets broken in, is the road noise really that bad? And also how do the soft tops hold up in extreme heat/sun conditions? I live in Texas and the summer times are brutal, and my wife is worried 'bout the top gettin' ruined.

I'm a big soft top fan. Here in Arizona a top will probably last 6 - 10 years depending on if you garage it. They are relatively inexpensive and easy to replace.

As far as the noise, allot depends on your tires. Off road tires can make lost of noise but factory tires are not too bad. For the concern of the top getting nosier when broken in, I've never heard of this. The tops are maid pretty well and it's not like you will be getting flapping noise, it's the road noise you will be hearing.

I personally think you should go with the rag top.

In the mean time . . .

I have found that noise inside my Wrangler when I have the soft top on is a function of tire tread pattern, the actual type of pavement (concrete seems to be way louder than asphalt), and whether or not you allow a "back seat driver".

I too have not heard of soft tops getting louder from wear. Hidden agenda there somewhere?

Oh yeh, and if you are not in the rainy part of The Great State of Texas, just leave the top down all the time, turn the stereo up, and see how quickly your concerns disappear!

Good Luck with your upcoming purchase.

Thanks for the feedback and the welcomes. Yeah anytime you put mud tired on a 4x4 vehicle you're gonna get road noise, but I plan on puttin' on all-terrain tires when I eventually need them. The only thing I'm sure I wouldn't be able to do is have dual glass packs installed which I'm a little bummed 'bout but I'll get over it
