Time for a new Jeep!

Hi Everyone - I have joined the forum to try to gain some knowledge on the differences between the various types of Wranglers.

I have a 1989 Wrangler that has been a great vehicle - has gotten me through many snow storms, once even pulling my friend's big pick up truck out of a ditch in the snow. And, it's taken my dogs on a thousand trips to the park.

But, now I'm looking for a newer one - probably used. My current Wrangler has exactly 0 comforts: no AC, the radio doesn't work, too high to easily get in (thanks to former husband), the soft top is so loud when driving at highway speed, and the heat barely works so it's freezing to drive in the winter.

So, I'm looking for a more comfy Jeep, one that I may use to commute in, as well as take the dogs to the park.

I've been doing some searches and the different models become pretty confusing to tell apart. I've looked for comparison charts, but have only found charts for brand new Jeeps, not for older ones - say in the last 10 years or so.

What I'd like my new Jeep to have: a hard top, AC, automatic, 6cyl, 2 door. Everything else is pretty negotiable.

Anyone who has any suggestions of which models have what I'm looking for, or where I can find comparison charts for older models, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks! I look forward to looking around the forums.

Once you identify the year you want, look at the car sites , such as Edumnds. They have a narrative explaining the model differences.

When you are looking at used Wranglers, if you want to see what the OEM equipment was, use this link:

Type in the vin number and the original build sheet will appear.

Looks like you are in MD. There are a lot of high volume dealers your way. Depending on your budget, you could most likely buy a new one for what dealers want for a late model used Wrangler

I don't mind spending money, I mind wasting money.

Thank you - yes, I am in Maryland. And I have noticed that the used ones are nearly as much as new. That is part of my confusion with the models - the used do seem to be priced high as compared to new.

Thanks for the info!

Generally speaking, if you're talking about the JK (started in 2007), the Sahara will have more creature comforts included as standard features on a Sahara package, While the Rubicon has more off-road upgrades, but you can get pretty much any of them with the options that you mention above.

Also, all 2007-2011 will have the same engine & transmissions (manual or auto) 2012 & up have a better engine and transmission package, but its also the same across all model lines.

I've had both the old and new versions of the JK and the new engine/transmission make it worth holding out for a 2012+ in my opinion.

If you're willing to stick with a TJ (prior to 2007) then a Sport or Sahara with the 4.0 liter engine is a good choice, as long as it has been optioned up with the features that you want.

Now I just need to decide if I want to pay for it

I'll make a decision in the next couple days.
