Back on island, noob offroader

I just got stationed back in Hawaii and brought my JKU with me. I haven't taken it off-road since I have no idea what I'm doing and would prefer not to just break things right off the bat. I've heard Ka'ena point is nice but I have no ideas on the laws here. I keep seeing people talking about permits and some places are legal to go and some aren't. Are there designated trails thee or how does that work? I'm not looking to go crazy yet, just running a stock sport with upgraded wheels and tires. Just wanna see new parts of the island, enjoy the beauty, see what the jk can do,and get a little dirty. Mahalo for any advice you may have.

Hey man I've been here awhile but I just bought my '13 JKU in May. So kind of in the same boat. I want to find some people to get together or join a club or what have you to learn and get my rig dirty. I'm navy btw by Pearl. Kaena point is easy to get a permit. I have gotten mine but haven't been out there. It's free and good for a year. You just have to go to the DLNA office, register and they give you a sticker and either text or email you a 4 digit pin each week to the gate out there. They also give you a map that outlines where you can go out there and read you the rules. They just don't want people trashing it really.
