Can I squeeze through a safety inspection?

Hi Guys,

I'm moving to Maui in a couple of weeks and wanted to ship my JK down. I was looking over the guidelines and saw that I need fender flares that cover the treads (easy albeit pricey fix) and the bumper can't be higher than 22" off the ground. I have a lift kit and aftermarket front bumper that puts it at about 27". Do you think it's easy enough to find a shop to give me a pass? Does anybody have any experience with this? Are lifted Jeeps non-existant in Hawaii? I'm moving from Miami and after spending $3,000 to get it down there I'd hate to find that I have to spend more money to bring it down closer to stock. Thanks.

Well I'm not sure how Maui does their inspections but on Kauai we just take those plastic garden walls and tape them under your existing fenders to extend them. Sorry I cant be of more help. Hopefully someone from Maui can chime in.

305, i think inspections vary by county. on Oahu, they did away with the stupid Recon inspection for modified vehicles, so idk how anybody gets a safety check these days if they're lifted. i know the last time i had to get my recon when i was living there, the inspection station said my jeep had to be a certain height from the bottom of the frame horn to the ground, and this depended on GVWR. i still passed because i only had a 4" lift.

and yes, fender coverage will make or break a safety inspection approval, no matter how you go about the fenders. as Kaiekahi mentioned, the garden walls are adequate. also, you may need mud flaps, depending if the OEM ones (if equipped) cover one half or more of the back of the tires going from the top towards the ground.

Thanks. I've installed the mud flaps before shipping and tires are popping out not more than an inch so I'll go the garden trim route if needed. It's on it's way down here already so I guess I'll find out soon enough about the lift.

I know I'm a year late but...I was looking to see if there were any Jeeps from Maui on here. You probably know by now, but if you're living around Central Maui, you should check out Patao's in Wailuku. Quickest inspection I've been through and virtually no questions asked.
