Jawest12ís JL Turbo

After the heft of my JK, I lost all emotional attachment to it. So, it’s gone. And now it’s time to build a JL. It was named by a friend almost immediately. It’ll do for now. It’s named Turbo.

JL Sport S. Hard Top, remote start, headliner, technology group and the 2.0 turbo. Also purchased the Aux switches to install myself.

I can say I’m a believer. Everything is just better. A wrangler is no longer a compromise. It used to be that there were trade offs for being so capable off-road and taking top/doors off.

But this thing rides so freakin nice. It’s quiet inside. To quote my wife, it doesn’t “feel” like a vehicle where the doors come off.

And this turbo has some get up and go! Never expected anything like it from a Wrangler. And the steering is awesome. I don’t currently have any of the reported JL steering wandering.

I figured this time I’d start with a build thread when it was new. So here it is fresh, no mods.

A few days after it was time for the first mod. The aux switch panel. Pretty straight forward install. Although it did require tearing out trim pieces and such. Thatís always a little painful when a Jeep is new.

The install leaves a little cubby to left when you donít have the rubicon sway bar disconnect and lockers. I think this would be a great opportunity for the aftermarket to add their own switch panel. The factory one is great I think, but Iím sure Iíll outgrow the four buttons.

In one of the pics you can also see the wiring is wrapped with the cloth stuff (name escapes me right now), which shows their attention to detail in the JL. This eliminates the squeaks and noises of wires rubbing on plastic.

The relays

Running the wire loom across the engine bay. Getting the zip ties through the wire channel behind it were a bit of a pain, but it looks great.

Ends over here. Wire up ground and positive. Run the rest down to wire inside.

You have to open the inner fender to get to the firewall grommet. But they give replacement POM rivets.

Pulled the wire through. Ran it into the center stack. Pulled all of it apart.

And the finished product. Still need to computer flashed to know itís there.

I left off several steps. But CJ parrís has an awesome video on the install. Very easy to follow.

I donít have anything to hook up to them yet really. But I still want to get it programmed so I can play with the settings.

Well, I do have an arb compressor that was on board air for my JK. Trying to determine mounting in the JL.

Its definitely a worthy upgrade for sure! Had I ordered one, that would have been on the list.

I’ll be glad to throw some Rancho stickers around here though. There are a ton of Jeeps in our area. Our club does a Jeep night every month, RTI ramp etc.

This was my last JK on our ramp. If you look closely, you can still see the spray painted front end from when it was stolen.

No new updates yet. Did get the aux switches programmed. Such cool stuff to have integrated like that. Especially with the options of being able to always turn on, or only with ignition, etc. Well done on this feature Jeep.

Not really a build item, but put the windshield down for the first time. Just as advertised, super easy. I normally love ya big windshield lights. But Iím going to need a mounting solution that doesnít interfere with this feature.

Anyone know if the Mopar light mounts move the light away enough?

Another small mod. The antenna X 24Ē. I chose it due to it looking like a fire stick. Itís below the roof line, and I like the way it looks.

This weekend will be RGBW rock lights. Which is a little silly still being stock. But wheels/tires should be soon.

Rock lights installed. Attached to the mopar aux switches. Love the switch programmability. These lights are pretty bright. Went with RGBW this time so that when used as actual rock lights, the white is better than regular RGB.

Need some real tires/wheels and lift to make the lights look better :-).

This was a more lengthy install than planned. Pulled the inner fenders liner out on all four to help with running the wires. All run on top of frame areas and behind liner. So nothing to get snagged or anything.

Wheels, tires and rubicon high line fenders on order. Hopefully here by Friday!

No lifts really for a 2.0 2 door yet. Other than spacer lifts.

So next step might be front bumper and winch.

Jawest12ís JL Turbo

Not a mod, but an update. Had to go for it's first big highway drive. This was my average MPG for the trip. I don't buy Wranglers for their great gas mileage, but this is pretty awesome.

At least until tires, lift, armor, etc. Lol.

That is utterly staggering. Let us know what you get when calculated from the fillup.

Based on fill up, which lowered it a bit after the picture on the readout as well, due to more city driving, it was still 27.1.

This was mostly highway driving, under 70, with a few parts of going 71-72. Pretty ridiculous in a good way.

Yeah, I got about 21.5-22 on a long highway drive. A 6mpg improvement over a JK on the highway and about a 10mpg improvement combined is some clever engineering.

A little bit of grow up time. Mopar hood decal. Definitely needed SOMETHING to break up the hood space.

Rubicon high line fenders. Mastercraft Courser MXT 35's and the wheels from my previous post.

Next up could be the beginnings of lift.

Those wheels are beautiful. I have Vision wheels and the fake beadlocks rusted after one winter. I won't buy Vision ever again.

Thanks! These ring is removable. So I can easily repaint it over time if it gets scratched off-road or rusts any.

The 35's would not fit on the stock spare tire carrier due to rubbing the bumper. I decided on the GoRhino spare tire relocation bracket due to it also having an antenna mount. Install was easy, other than requiring a little modification. Had to remove the stock carrier again, drill a hole, and reinstall.

Even with that, only took about an hour total. Now to get the spare on. Probably going to need a crane...

Time for another update. I got impatient. Lift kits for the 2 door are slowly trickling. I decided to start with Rock Krawlers stock mod kit, no shocks. I have springs, bump stops, front adjustable track bar. Rear track bar bracket and sway bar links.

Given my impatience, I decided to install it while waiting on my shocks and upper control arms. Going with adjustable uppers to begin with for caster correction. Then will add the other arms later.

Was only able to get the back done before hitting time of where I would run out of daylight. Tomorrow. The front! Will also be installing the Rustyís track bar brace. My Jeep is on the recall. My welds look good to me. But figured the brace couldnít hurt until FCA figures out their plan.

A little late on this update. I got the front done as well the next day. Then ran into an issue. Rock Krawler accounts for heavy bumpers and winches. Which is great. However, I donít have those yet. So my front end was raised up a bit. Fortunately, Teraflex already had a solution. A .5Ē spacer kit. Added to the rear, now pretty level.

Then to my favorite stuff, some gold Metalcloak goodness. Started with just the upper arms for caster correction. Will add the rest later. Still waiting for my Rocksport shocks though :-(.

Some of you may ask, why RK springs and stuff, then MC shocks and control arms. They both make great stuff. I am personally partial to MC. But they donít yet make a lift for the 2 door JL. Even once they do make springs I will probably still be limited to no taller than 2Ē. Which means Rancho springs are probably in my future. Once they release the 2Ē sport suspension for 2 door JLs :-).

Yes, Iím all over the map parts wise. But thatís ok, thatís half the fun.
