First Recall? Drive Shaft..

Just saw this article.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/autos/news...cid=spartanntp

Looks like there might be a few unlubed drive shafts driving around.

It also looks like there were 3427 Gladiators sold (or on dealer lots) from Dec 15, 2018 to June 25, 2019. So all you people wondering about sales numbers this might be a little insite??

It's like my GrandMa used to say, "Always keep your shaft lubed".

I was a fool with one of my wife's cars (Fiat 500). That did NOT end well....

Saw that and checked my VIN. I'm good. Mine must have been built after 6/25.

Fixed it for you...

Remember the mismatched interior pieces on the 2018 JK? I guess they use anything they can find in the factory to ship vehicles...

Less than 5% of those vehicles are affected.

Good reminder, will shoot mine tomorrow with an IR thermometer.
Factory parts are notorious for lack of grease.

We test drove one this past weekend. I mentioned this recall to the sales person and their response was "That's just a rumor"

If they were sure about that, they would have only recalled that 5%.

Fluke?

Question.. what's the temp spec with grease?

I found for FWD CV joints is ambient+30 degrees
probably this is for CV joints alone without any additional heating factors like brakes or transmission.

On my JK temps are slightly higher than that, roughly around 160f (ambient ~100) which is a few degrees lower than differential or TC. I doubt all that temp is from internal CV friction.
Since temperature is identical in all 3 CV joints I would consider that normal.
CV. Grease can probably resist up to 150C (300f).

IMO Without grease CV joint temp will be higher than differential or TC.

That’s right, you never know when you might want to light up some rubber.
